Hello to all SOS members! Wherever you spent the winter on the Great Lakes I am sure you would have to agree it was very different. We had some ice on Saginaw Bay, but it did not last very long. Fortunately, there were no severe winter storms that would have driven the ice into piles on the shore. This rather dry winter is
going to bring about some changes for us to deal with this summer. It looks like Lake Huron will be about 4 to 6 inches lower in July than it was in July of last year. That can mean ten to fifteen feet of beach added to what we experienced last year..
The picture you are looking at shows my beach as of 4/24/24. A stiff South wind is blowing, and this causes the water levels in Saginaw Bay to drop considerably. As a result of this phenomena, many feet of beach sand are added to our property. It is a beautiful soft sand beach that I hope all of you are experiencing.
I knew something different was happening and it took me a while to put my finger on what it was. The beach is quite clean already! No trash left on the ice by fishermen for us to clean up. No spent propane containers or old fishing shanties. No beer containers or broken bottles to wash up. No big logs came down the rivers and piled on our beach. There will be many more walleye for fishermen to pursue this summer because they were not harvested during the winter. One has to wonder how the EGLE or DNR along with the Corps of Engineers will deal with our right to maintain safe clean beaches.
